Harris County Housing Authority | Assistance for Families

In 2003, the Harris County Housing Authority was authorized as a public non-profit governmental organization for the purpose of providing decent, safe and affordable housing for the residents of Harris County and cooperative cities. On August 18, 2008 the Housing Authority opened the waiting list and received more than 21,000 applications.

Family & Individual Responsibilities
to participate in the HCV program please
read the following responsibilities.

Submit RFTA (Request for Tenancy Approval)
upon selection of a home, candidates will submit
the completed RTFA packet and all other necessary forms.

Complete Application online
to complete all necessary forms and documents for the application when the waiting list is open.
*application is currently closed

Inspection of Unit
the selected home will be inspected by an inspector of the HCHA.
All selected homes must be HQS ( Housing Quality
Standard) compliant.

Execution of Contract
upon approval the HCHA will enter contract with the landlord, the candidate will sign a lease with the landlord.

Waiting List Notification
all chosen applicants will be notified via mail.

Intake Interview
selected candidates will be interviewed to determine eligibility, the candidates are to provide all necessary documentation.

Payment to Landlord
HCHA will pay the candidate's landlord HAP (Housing Asistance Payment)

Voucher Briefing
selected candidates will be briefed about responsibilities and the program and issued
the Housing Choice Voucher.

Seeking a Home
successful candidates will then seek a suitable home. Candidate will need to complete the RTFA (Request for Tenancy Approval) Packet.
